Thai Rice Payment Terms: Why They Matter for Importers
Payment terms are one of the most important decisions in any Thai rice import transaction. The wrong choice can expose you to fraud, cash-flow strain, or supplier default. The right choice protects your capital while giving your Thai rice supplier confidence to proceed with milling and shipping. This guide explains the three main payment structures used in Thai rice trade and how to choose between them.

1. Letter of Credit at Sight (LC at Sight)
A Letter of Credit at Sight (LC at sight) is issued by your bank and guarantees the Thai rice exporter will be paid immediately (at sight) upon presenting compliant shipping documents to their bank. It is the gold standard for first-time Thai rice import transactions.
How it works for Thai rice:
- 1. You open an LC through your bank for the value of the shipment (e.g., 25 MT × $480/MT = $12,000)
- 2. TBS Rice Mills mills, bags, and loads your rice into the container
- 3. The exporter presents the Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, Phytosanitary Certificate, Packing List, and Commercial Invoice to their Thai bank
- 4. Documents are verified against the LC terms and forwarded to your bank
- 5. Your bank pays the exporter's bank at sight (same day or within 5 working days)
- 6. You release payment from your account and receive the shipping documents to claim the cargo at port
2. Telegraphic Transfer 30/70 (TT 30/70)
TT 30/70 means you pay 30% of the invoice value by wire transfer (TT) before production begins, and the remaining 70% before the Bill of Lading is released. This is the most common payment structure for repeat buyers with an established Thai supplier relationship.
How it works for Thai rice:
- 1. You approve the Proforma Invoice and wire 30% of the FOB value (e.g., $3,600 for a $12,000 shipment)
- 2. TBS Rice Mills begins milling and bagging your order
- 3. Container is loaded; you receive container photos and packing list
- 4. You wire the remaining 70% ($8,400)
- 5. Original Bill of Lading and full document set are released to you
- 6. You claim the cargo at destination port
3. TT 100% Advance
Full payment before shipment is the highest-risk option for buyers but the lowest-friction structure for exporters. It is sometimes requested for very small orders (1–5 MT courier shipments) or when the buyer has a long-established relationship and the order value is low.
Do not use TT 100% advance for your first container order from a new Thai supplier — it offers no protection against fraud or default. Always insist on at least TT 30/70 or LC at sight for container-load transactions.
4. Documentary Collection (CAD / DP / DA)
Cash Against Documents (CAD) or Documents Against Payment (DP) is a bank-intermediated process where shipping documents are released only upon your payment at your bank. Unlike LC, no credit is opened — documents simply flow through the banking system.
Key difference from LC: CAD provides no payment guarantee to the exporter (they can't be sure you'll pay when documents arrive). As a result, most Thai exporters only offer CAD terms to buyers they know well or who have provided a bank guarantee.
Negotiating Payment Terms with Thai Rice Exporters
When requesting a Proforma Invoice from a Thai rice exporter, your leverage on payment terms depends on:
Order history: First-time buyers are almost always asked for LC at sight or TT 30/70. After 3–5 successful container orders, you can negotiate TT terms with longer payment windows.
Order volume: Buyers committing to 10+ containers per year or annual supply contracts can often negotiate LC with a longer validity period or shift to open account on a portion of their orders.
Market reputation: Buyers from countries with strong banking infrastructure and trade histories with Thailand (Singapore, Japan, UAE, Germany) typically face less friction than buyers from newer markets.
Practical tips:
- Always receive a Proforma Invoice before opening an LC — ensure all LC terms match the PI exactly (rice grade, quantity, packaging, port, validity date)
- Build in at least 21 days of LC validity from the shipment date — Thai rice export documentation takes 5–7 working days to prepare
- For your first order, accept LC at sight without negotiation — the bank fee ($300–500) is cheap insurance for a $10,000–$25,000 shipment
- Specify "all bank charges outside Thailand are for buyer's account" in the LC to avoid unexpected deductions from the exporter's side

Common Payment Term Mistakes to Avoid
1. Opening an LC before seeing the Proforma Invoice: Your bank needs the exact shipment details to draft the LC correctly. Mismatches between the LC and shipping documents will cause discrepancies that delay payment and add costs.
2. Undervaluing the shipment: Always insure for 110% of CIF value (standard trade practice). Never under-declare value to save on import duties — this creates serious legal risk.
3. Not specifying the Bill of Lading type: For LC transactions, specify whether you need a Full Set of Original Bills of Lading (3/3), or if telex/express release is acceptable. Telex release is faster but less secure for first-time transactions.
4. Accepting pro-forma documents as originals: Always wait for original Bills of Lading from the shipping line before releasing any payment (for non-LC transactions).
